The advanced technology of the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution.
For years, Samaritan Healthcare has provided top-tier orthopaedic surgery performed by Dr. Leo Chough, our fellowship-trained surgeon, backed by the state-of-the-art resources of our medical campus.
Dr. Chough now performs total knee replacements using Samaritan’s new VELYSTM Robotic-Assisted Solution—one of only seven VELYS units currently available in the Northwest. This precise and highly accurate technology customizes knee replacements for the best fit, using information that’s specifically tailored to the anatomy of each individual patient’s knee. The device does not move or operate on its own. The technology and the procedure are controlled by the surgeon and include an infrared camera, optical aids, and other data that provides information about the patient’s anatomy.
“Because your knees are different from everyone else’s, with the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution, I am able to use reliably precise technology,” said Dr. Chough. “The best value of the robot is that it provides strategies for the implant to be placed as highly accurately as possible with the best balance, which will provide more consistent results. A well-placed implant may in fact feel better, allow more mobility, and potentially with less pain. Combining the high accuracy of robotic surgery with the existing protocols for pain management, allow for same-day discharge following surgery and create a very powerful combination directed toward best success in having a knee replacement.”
The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution is a welcome addition to the current, state-of-the-art, orthopaedic procedures offered at Samaritan.

“We were excited to add the VELYS system to the orthopaedic surgical options we already provide at Samaritan,” said Theresa Sullivan, CEO of Samaritan Healthcare. “As we look to innovate and advance the care available locally, we remain committed to and guided by our vision—‘Together, serving as the trusted regional healthcare partner.’”
In addition to utilizing the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution for knee replacements, Dr. Chough also has a wealth of surgical expertise in arthroscopy and joint replacement procedures, which allows patients to gain mobility and recover faster with less pain along the way. He is highly skilled in other joint replacement surgeries—anterior hip replacement, reverse and regular shoulder replacement, as well as arthroscopic procedures, such as rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction/revision, and more.
Samaritan also has a state-of-the-art HANA surgical table to position an orthopaedic patient’s body for surgery, such as an anterior hip replacement, during which Dr. Chough replaces the hip through a single, short incision without detaching the muscle from the pelvis or femur. He has performed the anterior hip replacement since 2003 and served as a regional live instructor for other surgeons wanting to learn the technique. His expertise and experience in these procedures utilize muscle-sparing surgical techniques—leading to more rapid recoveries for orthopaedic surgery patients.
