Special Care Unit

The special care unit at Samaritan has nine beds. It specializes in the treatment of patients with critical medical or surgical problems, ages three days and older. The purpose and mission of the special care unit is to provide care for all who require cardiac monitoring and those critically ill patients who may also require hemodynamic monitoring or breathing assistance via BiPap or a ventilator.

The special care unit is staffed with registered nurses and one certified nursing assistant during the day shift. All staff members are licensed in the state of Washington and hold basic life support certifications. Our registered nurses are all certified in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support and trauma nurse training.

We have many other staff members who work in conjunction with the nursing staff including, physical therapists, respiratory therapy, discharge planners, utilization review specialists and dietary specialists.

Most of our patients are cared for by a hospitalist—a physician who sees only hospitalized patients and does not have an outside office. Your primary doctor is notified you are here, and you will be referred back to your own doctor upon discharge.
